W hen you’re Marquette, there is an inherent difference between UP basketball teams and those below the bridge. The roster makeup and play styles of opponents in the postseason differs compared to the UP foes. More athletic and bigger come to mind.
As the only Division 1 school north of the bridge, trips downstate such as the one Marquette made to Traverse City this past weekend, serve as the only opportunity for the Redettes to see how they compare to schools of their size.
“They definitely push the tempo more downstate, and we can get our offense set up more in the UP,” Marquette junior Aspen Michelin said. “Just seeing the teams that we’re going to be playing in our district and stuff, I think it really helps us.”
There were moments in Marquette’s 51-40 win over Traverse City West where scoring a basket was a grind, but perhaps the lessons of going against a physical and athletic squad can pay dividends later on. Because for all the offensive struggles, Marquette’s defense was simply dominant at times for the second-straight game.
