W ith the All-UP teams dropping this weekend, Upbeat is breaking down the possibilities on the girls and boys side. Today is the first installment of the All-UP preview that previews the Girls Dream Team and First Teams in Divisions 1-3 and Division 4. The boys column will be released on Wednesday.

We’ll also be releasing coach’s picks for All-UP selections. The girls will come out on Wednesday while the boys picks are going to be released on Thursday. A podcast previewing the All-UP teams will also be released this week.

Nothing can draw a discussion quite like the release of the All-UP basketball teams. Well, maybe the ending of a certain state championship, but that’s been discussed ad nauseam.

I’ve reviewed in past columns how the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s All-UP selections serve as a source of pride for UP towns. You slight a player off a team, and you get an entire town that feels disrespected as well, and then complaints start with “The UPSSA … (fill in the blank).” Especially now in the age of social media where everyone has a platform to voice their displeasure. So by the time the teams are released, you’re bound to see one complaint about the selections if you refresh your timeline. It’s just the way it is.
