T here’s been more than one occasion this season where Negaunee coach Dan Waterman has questioned his team’s effort, which from the outside can seem surprising for a group that’s led by the fiery coach. Nonetheless, it’s happened. The slow start against rival Ishpeming and the loss against Gladstone were two notable instances.
And if there’s a school that demands an intense demeanor when you face it, the premier example is the Westwood Patriots. They play as hard as anyone and given their physicality, it’s almost a battle of wills when you go up against them.
“I told them before the game that it was pretty simple. If they don’t compete, they don’t win,” Waterman said. “Westwood is physically strong and has aggressive kids. They’re bigger and stronger than us, and if we didn’t match that aggression, they were going to shove us around.”
