W hen Marquette played Calumet on the road a few weeks ago, the Copper Kings put up a barrage of 3-pointers late in the game, and Marquette escaped with a six-point win.
After the game, Coach Ben Smith gave his team the facts. You won, he said, but now you’ve let Calumet think they can play with us.
“I told the girls you just gave them the thought that, ‘Hey, we were right there, if we just play like this we can come out and do what we want to do in Marquette,’ ” Smith said. “But in a weird way, I think that got us focused because obviously, we didn’t want that to happen.”
So when the Copper Kings came to town on Wednesday, Marquette wanted to make a statement. The team did that and more, defeating Calumet 68-35.
