St. Ignace

W hen the MHSAA classifications came out for the 2018-19 season, it’s safe to assume the Division 3 coaches in the UP let out a sigh of relief of sorts when they realized St. Ignace wouldn’t pose an issue for them. And with the Saints blowing out teams on a daily basis, it only solidifies those preseason feelings.

But Saturday was supposed to be different. It was supposed to be a test of the likes the Saints have rarely seen this season. Kingsley entered with the No. 2 state ranking in Division 2 and was a year removed from a state semifinal run. The Stags dominated in their own right, winning their 13 games by an average of 35 points. Hell, even their pregame routine was impressive. Brittany Bowman showcased a deft handle with the ball and a pure shooting stroke, while the 6-foot-2 Austyn DeWeese was casually doing backboard slaps in the layup line. They were as impressive as a team could look in warmups, which doesn’t really count for anything save for an intimidation factor, but still.
