A s fun as it was winning their first 11 games by an average of nearly 21 points, Westwood coach Kurt Corcoran knew it wasn’t sustainable or indicative of what his Patriots would face in March. Teams scout and adjust, and there’s the daily challenge of facing upset-minded groups who play with a certain vengeance; because who wouldn’t want to knock off a top-ranked squad?

Westwood struggled facing the first dose of adversity in over a month, scoring just 36 points in a loss to Negaunee on Jan. 18. Since then there’s been more trying moments. The early deficit to Gwinn, then the 10-point hole to rival Ishpeming. On Tuesday there was Iron Mountain’s Riley Poupore knocking down contested 3s and the Mountaineers frontcourt banging and battling down low, delivering the Patriots a physical battle in the post.
