B ucky Johnson isn’t afraid to mince words when discussing this season’s Iron Mountain squad, already claiming this group as one of the most talented he’s had in 29 years of coaching. However, even a historically talented team is not immune to the rust that’s typical in season openers. The Mountaineers started just 1 of 9 from the field against Gladstone and appeared a bit out of sorts as the offense attempted to find its way.
But that’s the luxury of having two of the best scorers in the UP on your team — to lean on when in a funk. First, it was sophomore Foster Wonders scoring 19 of his team-high 27 points in the first half. Then, junior Marcus Johnson bounced back from his 0 of 5 start to finish with 24 points. It was enough for the Mountaineers to offset the 33-point output from Gladstone senior Reece Castor for a 65-63 victory Tuesday in Gladstone.
