A s a 2006 Calumet graduate, Frank Bonacorsi can recall a growing interest in basketball throughout the accomplished hockey town during his high school career. He can also remember witnessing that passion manifest itself to on-court success. In 2012, Bonacorsi was in the stands when his alma mater cut down the nets in Hancock to celebrate the school’s first district title in 31 years. That moment stuck with Bonacorsi, and when you hear him talk about his affection for Calumet, it’s not hard to see why.
“I bleed blue and gray through and through,” he said.
Now, after eight seasons of coaching experience — six of JV basketball at Houghton, one of varsity football at Houghton and a JV basketball season at Calumet — Bonacorsi will take over a Calumet program that has enjoyed one of its best spans in boys basketball history. The Copper Kings have won three district championships and four West-PAC titles in the last five seasons. Prior to this stretch and dating back to 1950, Calumet had won just two of each.
