M att Laho does not raise his voice very often, if at all. During one of his practices, you can hardly distinguish his voice from the others on the floor. There is a calmness about him, but when he speaks his players listen. Such calmness is surprising, considering that Laho is a first-year varsity head coach, and a coach with big shoes to fill, at that. Since Laho has spent the better part of a decade and a half coaching basketball, his demeanor reflects his confidence in his approach, one not too different from what the Copper Kings are used to seeing.
The Calumet girls basketball program has not had a losing season since 2010-2011, a stretch which saw them win a Class C state championship under former head coach Jeff Twardzik. Laho understands the pressures that come with taking on this job and has wasted no time instilling his culture into this season’s team.
