Coaches react to new seeding system

A cross the UP, many coaches had a similar complaint regarding the boys and girls basketball postseasons: the lack of seeding. When the MHSAA announced the new seeding changes for 2019-20, you could almost hear the collective sighs of relief from coaches, quickly followed by an exclamation of “Finally.”

We talked to five coaches across the UP to get their thoughts on the latest changes, including Westwood girls coach Kurt Corcoran, Negaunee girls coach Brandon Sager, Ishpeming girls coach Ryan Reichel, Dollar Bay boys coach Jesse Kentala and Marquette boys coach Brad Nelson. All five coaches also played their prep careers in the UP and each of them felt the latest change was a long time coming.
