T he Calumet Copper Kings had a blueprint for how to be successful this season: play fast, limit turnovers and deliver suffocating defense.
In the opener against Jeffers, head coach Matt Laho emphasized those elements, and his team delivered all three of those traits in a 66-26 victory over Jeffers in its season opener Monday night in Calumet.
The Copper Kings jumped on the Jets from the opening tip, coming out in a full-court man-to-man look that forced multiple Jeffers turnovers in the opening quarter.
“We have a lot of guards on our team, and in practice when I’m watching it, the defense looked good,” Laho said. “It was hard to be able to tell how it was going to work in a game until we saw it during a game, but we came out and it looked good, they were able to execute it well tonight.”
