T he way Bessemer defended Wakefield-Marenisco’s premier guard, Mason Saubert, Thursday night, the Speedboys could withstand 23 points and a stellar game from Brett Heil.
Bessemer pulled away late in the third quarter for a 54-41 win over the Cardinals.
Nick Trudgeon led Bessemer with 16 points and Cade Mazzon had 14.
“We made more shots, we had a second scorer,” Bessemer coach Richard Matrella said.
The Speedboys defense, led by Uriah Aili and at times, Mazzon, didn’t let Saubert get loose for the 3s that he can knock down in bunches. Matrella has seen him hit them from well beyond the line, so his team guarded him well beyond the line.
“Mason is a tremendous player,” he said. “We guarded him straight up and we helped big time on the screens. Uriah is a tremendous athlete and when he puts his mind to it, he is one heck of a performer and he’s very athletic and he gets up and he’s quick enough.”
