I t took an extra period, but the Ishpeming Hematites were able to withstand a poor first half to defeat the L’Anse Purple Hornets 70-65 in overtime on Monday night in Ishpeming.
“L’Anse came out early and outplayed us in the first half,” Ishpeming coach Ryan Reichel said. “We were fortunate to be in striking distance at half. We had to apply full-court pressure in the second half that was able to create some turnovers.”
Ishpeming was able to capitalize on many opportunities from the free-throw line, shooting an astounding 46 free-throws on the night, making 32 of them. The Hematites were led by Madison Pruett with 25 points, and Emma Poirer added 22 points.
The Purple Hornets were led by Kailyn Voskuhl with 15 points, while Maija Rice chipped in with 14 points.
“The L’Anse zone was great and active tonight,” Reichel said. “The Rice sisters had great games and made us make mistakes on the defensive end.”
Ishpeming (5-10) welcomes Escanaba on Thursday
L’Anse (7-8) hosts Hancock on Friday
