I SHPEMING — Down five with under a minute to go, Tessa Leece told her coach Kurt Corcoran, Westwood would not be losing the game. But with little time left, Corcoran wasn’t sure.
He began planning his post-game interviews, all about how Westwood ran out of gas at the end. But then Leece took over. She scored 12 points at the free throw line in the fourth quarter and overtime, for 33 points total, and propelled the Patriots to a 65-60 win over Menominee.
The Patriots (1-0) were down five during that timeout, and when play started up again Leece came up with two steals and made five free throws to tie the game.
“It was all over the place. She did things that there are no stats for,” Corcoran said. “She was making every pass, she can jump so high, knocking down passes, getting her arms in the passing lanes and just pushing the ball up the floor.”
In addition to Leece’s 33, Many Koski added 15.
Emma Anderson (0-1) led Menominee with 18 points. The Maroons found success early on tossing it to Anderson in the post, and when Westwood would double, she’d find the open shooters on the perimeter.
“Menominee is going to be in most of the top 5 polls throughout the year,” Corcoran said. “They are a very good team.”
Westwood hosts L’Anse on Thursday.
Menominee hosts Stephenson on Thursday.
